The introduction of the 12-Speed drive into the Deore XT group meant that a new type of freewheel had to be introduced to assemble cassettes with very small sprockets. A perfect example would be the co-development of the Micro Spline freehub with DT Swiss. This enables Shimano to use cassettes with enormous bandwiths and the use of a small 10 tooth pinion. The free travel when pedaling is reduced and allows the best possible start, on race or trail.
